10 YEARS AGO AUGUST 28, 2013 England Farms, Inc., of Rison, a company specializing in raising hatching eggs for the poultry industry, has been sold to Jamaica Broilers Group Limited (JB Group). The transaction became official Monday, when Jack England, who founded the company in 1955, put his signature on the final agreement at the operation's headquarters in north Rison.
The first ever 'school shooting drill' at Rison High School will be held Thursday morning, an exercise that will test how the school and local law enforcement officers respond in the event there is a shooting incident at the campus.
The Kingsland City Council approved a resolution paving the way for the city to apply for a $51,000 grant to expand Kingsland City Hall, including a lobby/ reception area and two offices for the facility. The building is currently equipped with three small offices as well as restrooms, a kitchen area and the council chambers, which also serves as a community meeting room.
Niven Road in north Rison will be closed for a portion of the day Thursday so that two large culverts can be installed along a creek just east of the Hwy. 79 intersection in advance of a paving job that is scheduled to take place on the road this fall. The Arkansas Department of Highway and Transportation awarded the city enough money to pave the road, along with a portion of Mt. Elba Road in south Rison, with four inches of a new asphalt overlay. Both roads in the town are heavily traveled, including truck traffic on Niven Road.
The two-night Summer Showdown Rodeo Friday and Saturday at the Cleveland County fairgrounds arena in Rison attracted 190 contestants from four states.
