10 YEARS AGO DECEMBER 19, 2012 In light of Friday's horrific school shooting in Connecticut, schools in both the Cleveland County and Woodlawn school districts have been revisiting their on-campus security measures to make sure their campuses are as safe as possible. Last Friday, a lone gunman in Newtown, Connecticut, killed 26 people, including 20 young students, after shooting his way into the locked doors of the school. Rison Mayor Vernon Dollar announced this week that residents within the City of Rison will be receiving their new trash cans from Waste Management this week. Residents will still use their existing black trash cans provided by Get Rid of It, Inc., through the end of the month. After January 1, Waste Management will begin picking up trash in the City of Rison. The Kingsland City Council formally approved its 2013 budget last week that includes a number of cuts to help keep the city's finances afloat. Renee Parnell, financial director for the city, said the budget included cuts in pay for the mayor, city council members and the city's two marshals. The City of Rison has acquired the Moore Building and adjoining vacant lot near the corner of Third and Main in downtown Rison, and is also awaiting word on a long-term lease agreement for the city to take on the Pioneer Village as well, Mayor Vernon Dollar told the city council Tuesday night. The mayor said that a tenant for the building, Patty Cook of The Sandwich Shoppe, is already working on remodeling the building to become a restaurant. Cook will be renting the building from the city for her business. The vacant lot next door has been the focal point for the creation of a 'pocket park' by the Rison Shine Downtown Development. In other business Tuesday night, the council approved a resolution outlining the new water and sewer rates that will be applied to the bills that customers receive in January.
