10 YEARS AGO JUNE 15, 2016 July 6 is now the date when local phone and broadband internet service is scheduled to officially switch from TDS Telecom to its new owner, Ark-O Holding Company, it was announced by Jay Mitchell, vice president for Ark-O's Cleveland County operations.
A new round of improvements at the Pioneer Village in Rison is underway, including renovations to the old Mt. Olivet Methodist Church building. More than $10,000 in improvements have been made at the Pioneer Village this year, using grants, donations and money raised through various fundraisers to finance the work.
A review of the plans for the new media center (library) and a discussion of possibly paying off some of the district's debt were just two of the subjects addressed during an agenda-filled monthly meeting of the Woodlawn School Board Monday night.
20 YEARS AGO JUNE 21, 2006 Delinquent water customers in the City of Kingsland will be shut off. Delinquent water bills have been an ongoing problem facing the Kingsland town council, and an auditor has expressed concern with the number of delinquent water accounts.
A squirrel crawling into an electrical substation at Rison is being blamed for a blackout last Thursday morning that left all of Rison and the surrounding area without power for about four hours.
The Woodlawn School Board approved a new pay schedule for all faculty members. The proposed schedule gives teachers a $700 raise to their base pay.
Sally Lybrand, 21, of Rison, will be making her second consecutive appearance at the 68th annual Miss Arkansas Pageant this week in Hot Springs.
30 YEARS AGO JUNE 12, 1996 Preparations are being made for improvements on Hwy. 79 in Cleveland County, including wide asphalt shoulders. Hwy. 79 is known to be the only U.S. highway in this area, and possibly in the state, which still has gravel shoulders. The asphalt shoulders are planned all the way from the Dallas County line to Pine Bluff.
