10  YEARS  AGODECEMBER  2,  2014Two representatives from Liberty Utilities Company, the company that provides water service for Pine Bluff and White Hall, told the Rison City Council Tuesday night that their company is interested in acquiring more utilities, but Mayor Vernon Dollar said selling the city's utilities could have huge financial consequences for the city. Meanwhile at the regular monthly meeting of the council, Dollar also announced that the city has been awarded a $196,000 grant from the Delta Regional Authority to completely replace all of the sewer treatment equipment located at the treatment facility off Hwy. 79 North. In addition, the city council also approved the 2015 budget, but did so only after reducing the pay increases for city employees that were included in the original proposal.The Cleveland County Christmas Parade this Thursday evening in downtown Rison will kick off a variety of holiday events planned for the upcoming week across the county.County Judge Gary Spears took time during Monday night's Quorum Court meeting to recognize six long-time county officials who are in their last month of service to the county. Most will see their terms come to an end on December 31. Collectively, the officials represent 131 years of service to the county. The group includes two county officials, Clerk Sharon Gray and Coroner John T. Reed, also a former county clerk.County Treasurer Jack Hopson informed the Cleveland County Quorum Court Monday night that about 50 to 75 trash customers who usually pay their bills on time, for some reason did not pay their final bill and will therefore have the delinquent amount attached to their taxes. Hopson said he believes that the customers thought they no longer had to pay the bill after the new 2-cent sales tax passed in May that is dedicated solely to paying for the county's solid waste service.
