10 YEARS AGO JULY 24, 2013 Rison Shine Downtown Development has been awarded two grants totaling $4,650 to develop a 'community garden' in Rison and make improvements to help the new Rison Farmers Market. Of the grant total, $2,150 will go toward the development of a community garden at the Pioneer Village, while $2,500 will go toward improving the 'pocket park' on Main Street where the market is held. The Kingsland City Council approved an ordinance last week establishing city recorder/treasurer Leann Huntley as a fulltime position overseeing the city's day-to-day operations. Huntley has been handling the city's office duties since former Kingsland financial director Renee Parnell resigned in early June. The town council voted in June to abolish the financial director position altogether. Two more flag poles - one sporting the Arkansas state flag and the other a Prisoner of War/ Missing in Action flag - have been erected at Veterans Park here on either side of the American flag pole. Rodney Reed has become the second member of Rison's city council within a week's time to switch political parties, announcing this week that he is leaving the Democratic party to become a Republican. Reed joined fellow alderman Jimmy Bowlin, who announced the same move last week. Lynn Wilson, pharmacist and owner of the new Rison Pharmacy and Gifts, opened the doors to her new business Tuesday at the former Centennial Bank building at the southeast corner of Third and Pine streets. Wilson also owns Watson's Pharmacy in Fordyce. Rison and the county have been without a pharmacy ever since City Pharmacy on Main Street here closed in October, 2008, after many years in business in the town. The year reign of Rison's Sloane Roberts as 'Miss Arkansas' ended Saturday night at the annual pageant in Hot Springs when Amy Crain of Hot Springs was crowned as the state's new queen. 20 YEARS AGO JULY 30, 2003 After two week...
