95 YEARS AGO MARCH 29, 1928 Sheriff Jno. E. Smith and two special deputies captured their second large whiskey still during the past two weeks Tuesday shortly after noon. The raid was made near Mahoney's Ferry in Whiteoak township, 10 miles northwest of Rison. The illicit outfit was located some distance from a road and was in operation at the time of the capture. Together with the 240-gallon still and its contents, 41 barrels of mash was destroyed. Sheriff Smith said that at the approach of the officers to the vicinity of the still, five shots were fired by parties picketed as watchmen by the moonshiners, which was evidently a signal for their hasty departure from the still. He further stated that he was only able to catch a distant glimpse of one fleeing man after firing of the shots. Forty-two cases containing 15,120 eggs were shipped from Kingsland Monday morning. A total of 10,680 bales of cotton was ginned in Cleveland County from the 1927 crop, down from the 1926 production which resulted in 12,328 bales, the largest cotton crop in the county's history. The J.L. Sadler Lumber Co. in Rison is installing a commissary in one of the N.A. McKinney buildings in the brick row here. The company's office will also be located in the same building. Tom Blodgett, former mayor and businessman of Rison, died at his home in Twin Falls, Idaho. He was engaged in the real estate business here and was instrumental in attracting many immigrants from Kansas and other nothern states to buy land and settle in Cleveland County. He resided here from 1914 t o 1919. The first delivery of the new model Ford car to be made in this county was Thursday by the Bert England Motor Co., local Ford agents, to Guy M. Sadler of the Cleveland County Herald. The new car, a sport model coupe, was driven overland from Memphis. The company expects to make several other deliveries soon. ...
