95 YEARS AGO MARCH 8, 1928
For the first time in its history, Cleveland County will furnish a governor of Arkansas. When Lt. Governor Harvey Parnell goes into the governor's office within the next few days, he will be the first native son of this county to be the state's chief executive. Lt. Governor Parnell's elevation will follow the appointment of Governor Jno. E. Martineau by President Coolidge on Friday as judge of the Federal Court of the eastern district of Arkansas. Parnell, the state's first lieutenant governor, will serve until January, 1929, or the remainder of Governor Martineau's term. Parnell was born and reared on a Lee township farm in Cleveland County.
Rev. Paul E. Kemper of Little Rock, superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League of Arkansas, lectured to a large audience at the Methodist church here Sunday night.
Work is rapidly progressing on the erection of four new brick business buildings in Rison.
A 22-16 victory over Gould gave the Kingsland Greyhounds second place in the District Basketball Tournament at Pine Bluff and a right to go to the State Tournament at Batesville.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated as President of the United States on Saturday. The nation's 31st chief executive plunges into the most difficult situation ever to face a new president.
Rufus T. Buie, for several years in the hardware, furniture and undertaking business and whose establishment was destroyed in the fire which swept a block of business buildings here in December, is opening a new business in the Calaway building, where he will specialize in undertaking goods and caskets. He will also handle hardware and furniture.
Woodlawn's five months of free school closed Friday and a subscription school opened Monday with an enrollment of 55.
