10 YEARS AGO MAY 8, 2013 Cleveland County continues to make headway on collecting delinquent taxes, but county officials are also keeping a eye on revenue for county general. Despite making budget cuts in all departments this year and seeing more people pay their delinquent taxes, a reduction in state turnback money is making it tough to keep the county general budget afloat. The county general budget refers to the funding for all county departments outside of roads. Meanwhile, the Quorum Court has decided to mull its options in regards to buying two lots along Sycamore Street across from the east side of the court square. The Rison City Council has agreed to allow FBT Bank & Mortgage the naming rights to the new 'pocket park' on Main Street in the downtown area in exchange for paying for improvements to the park. Also, the council discussed the possibility of having local businesses show proof of paying sales taxes when they renew their city business permit each year. Veterans Park in Rison will soon be getting a new flag pole in honor of local veterans, thanks to the efforts of students in the Gifted and Talented program at Rison Middle School. Students presented Mayor Vernon Dollar with the flag pole in a ceremony last Thursday at the park. After one of the students noticed that there was no flag pole at the park, the group wanted to take that on as a project. The students held a silent auction and other fundraisers to raise $1,900 overall, about $1,600 of which was spent on the 35-foot flag pole. Following regional tournament play, the Woodlawn Bears will carry a No. 4 seed into the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament, while the Woodlawn Lady Bears will be a No. 2 seed in the state softball tourney, all which begin tomorrow.
