10 YEARS AGO MAY 21, 2014 Trash bills will become a thing of the past for Cleveland County residents later this year, as voters in Tuesday's primary election overwhelmingly approved a 2 percent sales tax that will pay for the county's solid waste program. The measure passed by more than a 2-to-1 margin - 994-432. Meanwhile, unofficial results show that former Sheriff Judy King clipped Charles Rodgers, Jr., in the race for District 9 Justice of the Peace on the Quorum Court by just a single vote, 8281. The ballot also included state races for congress, governor, lieutenant governor, state treasurer and auditor of state. Only about 31 percent of the registered voters in the county turned out for the election.Fourteen people, most of whom live south of the railroad tracks in Kingsland, asked Mayor Charles Crain and the Kingsland City Council to put more attention to maintaining their streets and ditches in that area of town. All of the streets mentioned at Monday night's meeting of the council are reported to be unpaved and are not graded very often. In other business, the council was informed that the town's holding pen for stray dogs is at capacity and there hasn't been any success in finding a facility to take them. One man in the meeting audience volunteered to provide a bag of dog food for the animals.Two Nebraska men were arrested early Tuesday afternoon in the north part of Rison after leading local law enforcement officers on a manhunt in the woods. The manhunt lasted about three hours. One of the individuals was wanted on a parole violation in Nebraska and is still being held here awaiting extradition to Nebraska, while the other individual was released and is no longer in the area.The board of the Cleveland County School District approved a request by the Cleveland County Head Start program to seek a grant of up to $495,000 to build a new Head Start facility at Woodlawn.
