10 YEARS AGO OCTOBER 9, 2013 Projections are showing that Cleveland County will likely finish the fiscal year with a balance of about $100,000, reversing a trend of declining year-end balances in recent years. Judge Gary Spears revealed that news during the Quorum Court's regular monthly meeting Monday night. In comparison, the county finished 2012 with only about $7,000 left over. It was also reported Monday night that the county is starting to receive its portion of the new 1/2-cent state sales tax approved by voters last year to improve four-lane state highways as well as to provide money for local road projects.
County Clerk Sharon Gray presented the Cleveland County Quorum Court with several issues regarding the preservation of old county records. Gray said the Arkansas History Commission has been taking old county records to Little Rock and putting them on microfiche. She said the first batch was for records that dated back to when the county was still called Dorsey County. However, it was also reported that the History Commission discovered the latest shipment of old books from the county were molded so much that commission staff members were having to wear protective suits to handle the books. It was explained that the books were being kept in the courthouse basement.
