 10 YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 4, 2015The Rison City Council voiced their support Tuesday night for keeping the city police force after rumors began floating around town that the city was going to contract out the service to the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department. Mayor Vernon Dollar said the scheduled retirements of police chief Jeff Prescott and Sgt. Greg Herron from the three-officer department is what sparked the rumors in the first place. Rumors of the sheriff's department taking over was probably based on the belief that Rison may take the same path as Kingsland, where that town's council voted earlier this year to replace its part-time city marshal with a contract giving the sheriff's department control of the city's law enforcement.County Judge Gary Spears told the Cleveland County Quorum Court Monday night that the county will be spending about $100,000 more next year than it is projected to spend this year.Dorothy Hall of Grant County, the former Dorothy Wilson of the Calmer community and Woodlawn High School graduate, announced that she will challenge Mike Holcomb of Pine Bluff for the District 10 seat in the Arkansas House of Representatives. District 10's territory includes a large portion of Cleveland County. Hall will be running as a Democrat. Holcomb, who defeated Hall in the 2012 Democratic primary, has switched party affiliations and will be running as a Republican in 2016.E.G. Wainwright, 27, of the Unionville community near Rison, was arrested last Tuesday for his alleged connection with a break-in at the Rison One Stop convenience store on October 26.Taylor Shay's Florist, Home Decor and More became the newest addition to downtown Rison in a grand opening of the business held last Tuesday at the new building located at the northwest corner of Third and Main streets.
