10 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 11, 2013 In a move designed to help prevent more financial issues in the Water Department, the Rison City Council voted Thursday night to raise water deposits and other fees. The council approved raising the water deposit fee from $100 to $150 for both renters and homeowners. There will also be a hike in the meter installation charge, gas inspection fee, building permits and the fee to repair streets damaged by plumbing repairs at a private residence or business. The matter of raising water deposits first came up during the August council meeting, when Mayor Vernon Dollar informed the council that the city was losing thousands of dollars from water customers who were leaving without paying their bills.
Voters in the Woodlawn School District will be deciding between incumbent Aaron Tooke of Rye and challenger 'Bugs' Andrews of Randall in the annual school election there next Tuesday. Tony White is unopposed for the Zone 6 position on the board of the Cleveland County School District.
Cleveland County residents can learn more about the state's new Health Insurance Marketplace in an 'Informed Communities' Town Hall meeting here tomorrow night.
Cleveland County has been placed under a burn ban, effective last Friday, the county's second burn ban this year.
The Woodlawn School Board approved allowing privatelyraised funds to build an extension to the baseball/softball training facility and then have the district spend up to $10,000 to finish out the inside. The board also began discussion on the possibility of paying to have a school 'resource officer.' The matter was tabled.
Although Rison had ball possession for an amazing 38 minutes, including a school record 84 offensive plays, compared to just 10 minutes and 34 plays for Fordyce, the Wildcats dropped a 28-21 decision to the Redbugs in the annual season-opening football game at Fordyce Friday night.
