WOODLAWN - Woodlawn overcame a sluggish start and the absence of a key contributor in the first half as the Bears surged ahead in the second quarter before pulling away for a 6146 win over the Ouachita Warriors in the 8-2A conference opener last Friday night at the Woodlawn Gym.
The Warriors got off to a strong start, ending the open period with a 16-8 lead. But the Bears began to find their offense in the second quarter, outscoring Ouachita 23-10 to take a 31-26 lead into half despite Woodlawn's leading scorer, Raylon Lawson, on the bench with foul problems.
Woodlawn carried over that momentum into the second half, winning the third quarter 16-6 to take a comfortable 47-32 lead into the final frame.
"We moved the ball much better in this game," Bears Coach Logan Adair said about the the progress he saw from his team after suffering a 66-44 at Bismarck earlier in the week.
Lawson returned to the floor in the second half and ended up leading the Bears in scoring with 16. Landen Booth, who did not play in the first half, followed with 14 points over the final two quarters for Woodlawn while Caleb Martin and Garrett Weatherford had nine points apiece.
Adair commended the play of Brayden Kitchens, who played some valuable minutes at the post during the second quarter while Lawson was sidelined with foul trouble.
Woodlawn improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win.
Bismarck 66, Woodlawn 44
Bismarck built a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter, and was never really threatened the rest of the way as the Lions knocked off the Woodlawn Bears, 66-44, in a non-conference game last Tuesday at Bismarck.
Bismarck scored 22 points in the opening quarter to take a 2211 lead by the start of the second. The Lions extended their lead to 34-21 by halftime before closing out the game on a 13-3 run in the fourth.
