Bears Edge DeWitt in Tourney Tune-Up

WOODLAWN - Woodlawn managed just one hit against  DeWitt Tuesday afternoon, but the Bears still managed to pull out a 6-5 win over the Dragons in a final tune-up game before the 8-2A District Tournament this week at Parkers Chapel.Woodlawn improved to 25-5 overall while DeWitt, which is tied with Rison for the 8-3A conference lead, fell to 16-10 overall.The Bears found themselves down 2-0 after the top of the first when the Dragons used a lead-off double, two walks and an error to generate a couple of runs.Woodlawn answered with two of its own in the bottom of the first. After the lead-off batter lined out, Mason Edmonds had what would be the Bears’ only hit of the game. Tate Hall, Garrett Weatherford and Hollis Holderfield drew three consecutive walks to force in one run before a two-out walk pushed another across to tie the game, 2-2.The Dragons left a couple of runners stranded in the top of the second before the Bears grabbed the lead in the bottom of the inning.Parker Arnold and Peyton Wells were both hit by pitches to start the frame, and a walk to Edmonds loaded the bases.  Hall then drew another walk to bring in a run, and Weatherford had a a sacrifice fly to center that scored Wells. Edmonds then reached home on a passed ball and Holderfield followed with another fly ball that allowed courtesy runner Gage Boykin to tag up to make it 6-2.DeWitt got three of those runs back in the top of the third when Caleb Simpson launched a three-run homerun to pull the Dragons within 6-5.Both teams put runners aboard in each of the following frames but neither could cash in. Both teams turned double plays as well to turn back possible threats.Hall started on the mound for the Bears and got the win.
