Bears Looking For Better Luck This Year As They Host Midland

WOODLAWN - The last time that the Woodlawn Bears and Midland Mustangs met it was Friday the 13th - and it certainly played out that way for the Bears.By the fourth quarter, half of Woodlawn's starters on both sides of the ball were sidelined with injuries as the Mustangs pulled away for a 26-0 victory on a rain- soaked field. Woodlawn Coach Doug Means hopes to have a bit better luck this Friday night as his Bears host the Mustangs for what will be their first and only home game at the Carl Jones Sports Complex until Oct. 17. The junior high teams are set to kick off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity teams at 7 p.m.Midland used last year's win to spark an 11-0 run that ended with a North Conference championship and a trip to the 8-Man State Finals. The Mustangs, however, suffered their first and only loss of the season against Strong in the championship game, 66-14. The 'Stangs return five starters on offense and defense from that team, including their senior quarterback, Chase Rascoe. He found then-senior running back Brayden York behind the coverage for a couple of 81-yard touchdown passes last year that proved to be the back-breaker for Woodlawn.This will be the second game of the season for both teams with Midland opening the year on Aug. 29 with a 36-6 win over the Dermott Rams.Woodlawn Coach Doug Means says Midland is somewhat a mirror image of Woodlawn in that they both have strong lines and average speed at the skill positions.Mustang Coach T.J. Pugh will depend on Rascoe to once again guide his option-based offense. Entering his third year at the position, Pugh told Hooten's Arkansas Football that his 6-0, 185pound quarterback possesses 4.7 speed. Means said they usually run out of a two tight end set with a wing while taking snaps from under center and in the shotgun.While Rascoe is back at quarterback, York is gone. Means said senior running back Jayce Adams was getting most of the work in the win over Dermott....
