Dumas Scores Late To Force OT; Jr. Wildcats Suffer First 8-3A Loss

RISON - Dumas scored a touchdown with 3:09 left in regulation to the tie game and then was able to pull out a 34-28 win in double overtime as the Junior Bobcats edged the Rison Junior Wildcats in an 8-3A conference clash last Thursday in Dumas.

It was Rison’s first conference loss of the season as the Junior ‘Cats fell to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The Junior Wildcats led for much of the game before Dumas made the late run to tie it.

Mason Johnson gave the Junior ‘Cats a 6-0 lead with 4:25 left in the first quarter when he took an option pitch from quarterback Weston Phillips and went 22 yards for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, leaving Rison up 6-0.

The Junior Bobcats came back to tie the game on a 48-yard pass play at the 5:55 mark of the second quarter. They were also unsuccessful with their conversion attempt so the score remained 6-6.

Rison, however, was able to regain the lead before the half when Phillips scored on a three-yard quarterback keeper, and Trent Pickett ran in the two-point attempt to make it 14-6 at the break.

Dumas started off the second half with a huge play when the Junior Bobcats’ returned the opening kickoff 57 yards for a touchdown. However, the two-point attempt was stopped, and Rison remained on top, 14-12.

The Junior Wildcats were able to extend their lead in the fourth quarter when Phillips hit Pickett for a 14-yard touchdown with 3:33 left. However, the two-point attempt failed leaving it as a one-score game at 20-12.

Just 24 seconds later, the Junior Bobcats had a 48-yard pass play to score with 3:09 left. They then ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game, 20-20.

Dumas received the ball first in the first overtime and scored on a four-yard run and the converted the two-point play with another run. Rison answered when Phillips scored on a four-yard run and added the conversion run as well to make it 28-28.
