WOODLAWN - Carson Young scored five touchdowns and rushed for 234 yards as the Woodlawn Junior Bears overcome some mistakes on offense to dominate the Friendship Aspire Junior Jaguars, 48-6, in their South Conference opener Friday afternoon at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.
It was the fourth straight win for the Junior Bears as they moved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in South Conference play.
Friendship, a charter school in Pine Bluff in its second year of playing football, struggled to sustain drives, and Woodlawn pounced when they managed to hold onto the football. The Junior Bears lost two of five fumbles and also had an pass deflection that turned into an interception and touchdown for the Junior Jaguars.
Friendship’s first series went four-and-out after Wyatt Parker and Grayson Johnson both had tackles for losses in the game’s opening drive. Two plays after the change of possession, Young went 29 yards for his first TD. The two-point attempt was short.
Young then recovered an onside kick by the Junior Bears at the Junior Jaguar 35, but Woodlawn fumbled it away on the next snap.
Jones returned the favor with an interception that he returned 24 yards to the Friendship 20. On the next play, Jones hit Young all alone crossing into the end zone to make it 12-0 in the first quarter. The conversion attempt was stopped.
Woodlawn came up with another onside kicked when Duke Scott gathered up the loose ball at the Friendship 33. Young had his third touchdown five plays later with a 22-yard run. This time Jones added the two-pointer to make it 20-0.
After the Junior Jaguars finally recovered another onside attempt, they ripped off their biggest run of the game when a backwards pass went for 45 yards. Young tracked him down and then knocked the ball loose at the Woodlawn 13 and Blake Heflin recovered for the Junior Bears.
