Meyer Looks To Work On Pass Game Against Hermits

WOODLAWN - Woodlawn will be looking to improve to 2-0 in South Conference play this Friday night with the Bears host the Hermitage Hermits for homecoming at the Carl Jones Sports Complex. The junior high teams will kick off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity teams at 7 p.m. Hermitage, 0-3 overall and 0-2 in conference, suited up 10 players for its league match-up with Mountain Pine last week. While the Hermits fell 52-0 in that game, they still saw some success moving the ball against the unbeatened Red Devils. Hooten’s Arkansas Football has Mountain Pine ranked as the top Class 2A eight-man football team in the state. “They should have taken the opening kickoff in for a touchdown,” Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer said about the Hermits’ opening kick against the Red Devils. While the Hermits may have a small roster, Meyer cautioned against taking the Hermits lightly. “They moved the ball from 20 to 20 pretty much (against Mountain Pine), but they kind of sputtered once they got into the red zone,” he said. Senior slot/receiver Angel Garcia is the spark plug for the Hermitage offense. He said Garcia is quick and fast, and managed to get outside the quick Red Devil defense last week for some nice gains. Offensively, Meyer said the Hermits will give Woodlawn a lot of different looks. While they may go with double receivers on one play, he said they may come back in the single wing on the next. From the film he saw from last week’s game, Meyer said they were about 50 percent run and 50 percent pass. The Bears enter at nearly full speed. Meyer said special teams player Matthew Vontungeln injured his hand during practice this week, and his availability is not known. As for the rest of the roster, Meyer said they should be ready to go.
