WOODLAWN - If the Woodlawn Bears didn't turn the ball over, they scored. It was as simple as that last Friday night as they blew out the Dermott Rams, 70-20, in a dominating homecoming victory at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.
The Bears scored on nine of their 11 possessions with their only two empty series ending on turnovers inside the Dermott 20.
Dermott simply had no answer to the Bears' bruising rushing attack. Woodlawn finished with 430 yards rushing and 92 yards passing for 522 yards of total offense. And they piled that up despite having a running clock for the entire second half after going up 56-20 at the break.
Woodlawn had two players break the century mark in rushing with running back Garrett Weatherford racking up 122 yards on 14 carries with three touchdowns, and quarterback Aden Moore continuing to thrive in the option game by rolling up 118 yards on 10 keepers. Brayden Jones and Ethan Adair both had strong showings as well with Jones rushing for 84 yards on just seven carries with two scores and Adair running for 77 on 10 attempts.
Meanwhile, all the success on the ground left the Rams vulnerable to the play-action pass and Moore executed it perfectly, hitting two-of-three attempts for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Both went to senior tightend Aidan Johnson.
Going into the game, Bears Coach Zach Meyer was concerned how well his team would be focused for the matchup considering all the distractions with homecoming week. It turned out that they were more than ready right from the start.
After forcing the Rams to a three-and-out on their opening series of the game, Woodlawn reeled off a couple scores to take a quick 16-0 lead. The first was on a six-yard run by Jones and the second on 27-yard touchdown pass from Moore to Johnson.
