RISON - Woodlawn will be going into unfamiliar territory this week when the Bears host the Dermott Rams at the Carl Jones Sports Complex this Friday night. It may seem a bit unfamiliar because this will only be the second time this season the Bears have played at home.Woodlawn will be playing its first home game since coming back from three scores down at halftime to upend the Midland Mustangs, 42-32, back on Sept. 12. The three games they have played since then - including a fourth one at Augusta that was canceled - were all on the road. The good news for the Bears moving forward is that the final three regular season games are all at home. And should they win out, the Bears would also be the home team throughout playoffs as well. The junior high teams are scheduled to play at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity teams at 7 p.m.“It’s unbelievable,” Bears Coach Doug Means said about finally getting to play at home again. “School has been kind of electric this week... I’ve had some people who have not been able to come to some of the games tell me they plan on being there Friday night.”One reason for the excitement is that Woodlawn is off to 5-0 start with a 2-0 mark in South Conference play. A couple of those wins were against the 2024 state finalists - the victory over Midland and the 58-34 win over Strong two weeks ago.Dermott enters Friday’s matchup with a 1-3 overall record and 1-2 mark in conference action.Woodlawn and Dermott share three common opponents so far this season: Midland, Strong and Hermitage. The Bears won all three of those games. The Rams fell to Midland, 38-16, in their season opener before knocking off Hermitage, 38-16, before falling to Strong in a close one, 22-6. Dermott’s other conference loss came against Brinkley, 20-14, two weeks ago.Means said the Rams are like just about any other South Conference teams they face: they will have plenty of speed at the skill positi...
