ROSE BUD - While it certainly didn't win any beauty contests, first-year Woodlawn Coach Doug Means took it none the less as his Bears overcame a shaky start and 135 yards in penalties to pick up a 42-24 win over the Rose Bud Ramblers in the season opener Friday night at Rose Bud.Woodlawn, which entered the game without playing a scrimmage, stumbled out of the gate as Rose Bud took over near midfield after the Bears failed to convert on fourth down. Rambler quarterback Dylan Hunkapillar then reversed field on the next snap and raced 52 yards into the end zone to give Rose Bud a quick 60 lead with 10:21 left in the first quarter.The Bears answered with a five-play, 53-yard scoring drive started with a 23-yard gain by quarterback Ethan Saeler and ending with a 29-yard touchdown scamper by sophomore Griffin Manes. Fullback Ace Cul-liford barged in for the twopointer to give the Bears an 8-6 lead.Rose Bud countered with what would be its best drive of the game, marching 60 yards in 14 plays before Hankapillar hit a 8yard touchdown pass on fourth down to cap the drive. The conversion pass was no good, leaving the Ramblers with a 12-8 lead with 8 seconds left in the first quarter.About midway through the second period, Woodlawn's Dakota Campbell recovered a Rose Bud fumble at the Bears' 40 yard line. After a personal foul against the Ramblers, Saeler made his first completion of the game, a 23yard strike to tight end Beau Watson. Three plays later, the duo hooked up again, this time going 18 yards for the score. The conversion run was no good leaving Woodlawn with a 14-12 lead with 2:10 left in the first half.Hankapillar came back with a TD pass of his own, this one going for 49 yards as the Ramblers regained the lead, 18-14, with 1:04 left in the second quarter.The Bears then recovered Rose Bud's onside attempt near midfield with 59 seconds left.
