WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn Bears will have an opportunity to earn a home playoff game this Friday night when they make the trip to Hempstead County to face the Spring Hill Bears in a battle that will determine the South Conference playoff seedings for both teams.
Mountain Pine, which has completed its regular season by virtue of a forfeit from Dermott this week, is the South Conference champion with a 6-0 record in conference play and 10-0 mark overall. Second place, on the other hand, is still to be determined.
Woodlawn currently sits in second at 4-1 in league action and 7-1 overall. The Bears are a game ahead of Strong, which is currently in third at 4-2, and Spring Hill, which is currently fourth at 3-2.
Should Woodlawn win Friday night, the Bears would be the no. 2 seed, Strong (by virtue of beating Spring Hill head-to-head 146) will be the no. 3 seed and Spring Hill the no. 4 seed.
Should Spring Hill win Friday night, there would be a threeway tie between the three teams and the tie-breaker system would come into play. Woodlawn knocked off Stronbg 50-20 in their head-to-head match-up.
The no. 2 seed from the South will host the no. 3 seed from the North in the first round of the state playoffs beginning Nov. 11. The no. 3 and no. 4 seeds will be on the road against the no.2 and no. 1 seeds, respec‐tively, from the North.
Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer said his Bears will need to play much better than they did this past Friday night when they had to overcome a variety of mis‐takes and turnovers to pull out a 40-20 at 2-5 Marvell.
Meyer described Spring Hill as being a big team up front that likes to run the option and use their big fullback to carry much of the rushing load. And while Spring Hill does not throw the ball much, Meyer said the Bears are really good with the play ac‐tion game. “They don’t do a whole lot, but anything they do, they do it really well,” he said.
