10 YEARS AGO OCTOBER 16, 2013 The 24th annual Rison in The Fall Festival will be held Saturday at its new location, the Pioneer Village. After seeing dwindling participation and attendance in recent years at its original downtown Rison location, festival organizer Roy Phillips made the decision to move the event to Pioneer Village this year after the City of Rison acquired the property. It is hoped that the change of venue and a $1,000 barbecue cook-off grand prize will revive the festival. Will Hayden of the national television show 'Sons of Guns' will be in attendance, while numerous other activities and entertainment will be held. Brigit Smith was crowned homecoming queen at Woodlawn High School last Friday when the Bears gained their first victory of the season by edging the Hampton Bulldogs, 38-36, in double overtime. The Woodlawn School Board approved the addition of another second grade teacher Monday night that will give Woodlawn Elementary three second grade classes rather than just two due to a push of the state limit on the maximum number of students allowed in a classroom. 20 YEARS AGO OCTOBER 22, 2003 The Arkansas Department of Health will be offering free flu shots for residents of Cleveland County on Saturday at the county fairgrounds here. The flu vaccination clinic is part of a bioterrorism preparedness drill to simulate a mass smallpox vaccination clinic. Cleveland is one of nine counties in the state conducting the exercise. The purpose of the exercise is to evaluate county plans for responding to a post bioterrorism event in the area. The Kingsland School District has been awarded $70,770 through a federal grant to help establish a compressed interactive video (CIV) classroom on campus. Kingsland is one of five districts that will share a $353,850 grant provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Southern Consortium's Rural Utilities Service Learning and Telemedicine Grant program. ...
