10 YEARS AGO OCTOBER 7, 2015 Cleveland County Judge Gary Spears voiced his opposition during Monday night's Quorum Court meeting to some possible options by a state highways review committee that he said would take money away from county roads. One proposal being considered, Spears told the court, was that maintenance on all state highways that do not see at least 2,000 cars per day travel over them should be turned over to the counties. Spears said that would mean that six state highways - 11, 35, 97, 114, 133 and 212 - totaling nearly 100 miles in Cleveland County would be turned over to the county for maintenance.A meeting proposed between the City of Rison and the Rison Housing Authority to address an ongoing issue regarding a roadway that runs through the Tolson Apartment complex in the northeast part of town, and a 1966 agreement between the city and the authority, has never materialized, Mayor Vernon Dollar told the city council Tuesday night. Meanwhile, the council did approve a revised ordinance that will allow residents inside the city limits to keep up to 20 chickens per household.Cleveland County Judge Gary Spears issued a statement Tuesday declaring his intentions to seek his sixth two-year term in the office in 2016. Meanwhile, County and Circuit Clerk Jimmy Cummings announced his intentions to seek a second term to the office.Monta Thomas of Hermitage scored six touchdowns and accounted for 303 yards in total offense, but the Hermits ran out of gas in the second half and dropped a wild 77-36 decision to the Rison Wildcats here last Friday night.
