Edmonds’ Grand Slam Seals Win; Bears Top Seed at District

BIGELOW - Gavin Edmonds smashed a grand slam home run in the top of the seventh as  the Woodlawn Bears broke the game open late for a 6-2 win over the Bigelow Panthers  in their regular season finale Monday at Bigelow.Woodlawn, now 20-6 overall, are next scheduled to play in the 8-2A District Tournament semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Gurdon.  The Bears earned the league’s no. 1 seed heading into the district tournament after finishing the conference schedule with a 7-1 record.By making the semifinals, Woodlawn automatically earns a berth in the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament that will be held nest week at Murfreesboro.The Bears were clinging to a 2-1 lead at Bigelow Monday as they entered the top of the seventh. The first three batters reached: Hollis Holderfield on an error, Ethan Saeler walked and Logan Clark singled. With the bases loaded and no one out, Edmonds stepped up to hammer his first-ever varsity homerun in style over the centerfield fence.Woodlawn took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Holderfield drove in Parker Arnold with a single. Bigelow answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to tie the game, 1-1.The Bears regained the lead in the third when Arnold had a one-out solo homerun. The scored remained 2-1 until the seventh.Edmonds went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and his grand slam homerun, finishing with a game-high four RBIs. Arnold, Holderfield and Clark accounted for the other Woodlawn hits.Clark started on the mound for the Bears and went two innings. He gave up two hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Tyler French threw the third inning to get the win. He was tagged for one hit and two walks.Tyner Burris gave up two hits and two walks with three strikeouts over the fourth and fifth innings. Motes gave up two walks and two hits over in his single inning on the mound while Holderfield finished the game giving up one hit without a walk...
