10 YEARS AGO MAY 28, 2014 Despite having fewer contested races, voter turnout in Cleveland County for last week's primary election ranked among the top third in Arkansas, according to data released by the Secretary of State's office. While there was only one locally contested race in the primary, the Republican primary had a lot more races to offer voters than the Democratic party. In the only local race on the Democratic side, District 9 Justice of the Peace Charles Rodgers, Jr., of Rison announced he will not seek a re-count despite losing his seat on the Cleveland County Quorum Court by a single vote to former Sheriff Judy King, 82-81. Since King will not have an opponent in the November 4 general election, she will automatically become the new District 9 J.P. on January 1, 2015.A Rison man and another man living in Lincoln County were arrested last week for selling illegal drugs in Cleveland County, Chief Deputy Gary Young of the county sheriff's department announced. Arrested were 52-yearold Waymon Haywood of Rison and Jeremy Kimbrough, 33, of Lincoln County.Leaders in high school graduating classes in the county were Jackson Lowery, valedictorian, and Drake Palazzi and Brett Springfield, co-salutatorians, of Rison High School, and Jacob Richardson, valedictorian, and Erica Kriner, salutatorian, of Woodlawn High School.20 YEARS AGO JUNE 2, 2004 Some churches in Cleveland County have joined a statewide petition drive to have an amendment banning same-sex marriage and civil unions added to the state constitution.The Kingsland School Board is scheduled to meet Thursday afternoon to open bids for construction of a proposed new high school building to replace the one destroyed by fire last year.Several trees were blown down and at least one house was damaged when a thunderstorm, packing strong winds and heavy rain, moved through Cleveland County Sunday night.The Woodlawn Vo...
