10  YEARS  AGOJULY  16,  2014Demolition of the old two-story Phoenix Hotel on Main Street in Rison could begin within the next week, Troy Duke, president of The Bank of Rison, announced. Duke said last month that The Bank of Rison had bought the Phoenix Hotel and the neighboring Ackerman building at the northeast corner of Second and Main to make way for a new bank. The bank also acquired the two adjoining buildings located north of the Phoenix, and they will also be razed. In all, the bank will have about a half a city block along Main Street available for its new bank building.No one has filed to run for the Zone 1 seat on the Cleveland County School Board, while incumbent David Stover was the lone candidate to file for the one position up for election on the Woodlawn School Board. The Zone 1 seat on the Cleveland County School Board is currently held by Rickey Spencer of Kingsland. Spencer has been a board member ever since the Kingsland and Rison school districts merged in 2004. Since no one filed for the position, Spencer will remain on the board unless he decides to resign.The Woodlawn School Board approved a motion Monday night to allow the Cleveland County Head Start program to use part of the Woodlawn campus to build a new Head Start building and playground. The Head Start Center at Woodlawn currently consists of a couple of portable buildings that are starting to fall into disrepair. While the local Head Start program is administered through the Cleveland County School District, Cleveland County will be the lead agency in applying for grant money to construct a new building.A Rison man, Brian Almond, 41, was reported to have been killed Monday evening in a shooting incident that occurred at Pine Bluff.
