10 YEARS AGO AUGUST 13, 2014 The board of the Cleveland County School District unanimously approved a new policy Monday night that outlines the fees and requirements for public use of school facilities for both athletic and non-athletic events. The policy comes about two years after the idea was first discussed at a meeting about creating guidelines of how outside groups can use school facilities at both the Rison and Kingsland campuses.Cleveland County Judge Gary Spears said he has offered to 'split the difference' with the county's solid waste contractor about an ongoing billing dispute, but has yet to hear back from the company. The dispute involves the number of trash cans the company claims it is picking up for the county. Based on the current rate of $12.54 per customer, the dispute over the number of cans picked up costs the county over $22,000 per year.The Woodlawn School District learned Tuesday that it will be getting $81,000 less than it thought it might be getting from the state for enrollment growth, but Supt. Dudley Hume said he anticipated such a move might happen and had adjusted the budget beforehand. The Woodlawn board is also looking at construction of a new maintenance facility for the district's fleet of buses. While such a facility has been on the district's agenda for years, this is the first time that it has taken first priority as far as a building project is concerned.20 YEARS AGO AUGUST 18, 2004 The beginning of a new era for students at Kingsland and Rison starts tomorrow, when the first official day of school begins under the new Cleveland County School District following the merger of the two districts this summer.
