10 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 10, 2014 The board of the Cleveland County School District accepted two bids Monday night from people wanting to buy some of the modular buildings that have been used for the Head Start programs at Kingsland and Woodlawn. The Cleveland County School District has applied for a $490,000 grant that will be used to build a permanent Head Start structure at the Woodlawn campus. Woodlawn is currently the only Head Start facility that is not in a permanent structure.Several Republicans running for statewide and local offices, including gubernatorial candidate Asa Hutchinson, are expected to be in attendance Saturday afternoon for the Cleveland County Republican Party's 'Lincoln-Reagan Day' fish fry to be held at the fairgrounds in Rison.The Cleveland County Fair, September 17-20 at the fairgrounds here, will be celebrating the area's local heritage this year with a special tribute to native son Johnny Cash, as well as a Civil War 'living history' event.Bringing schools off the 'need improvement' list was the theme for the Cleveland County School District's 'Report to the Public' held Monday night in the elementary school auditorium here. Those giving reports Monday night included Supt. Johnnie Johnson, Rison High School principal Davy King, Rison Elementary principal Jeff McKinney, and Kingsland Elementary principal Danny Durey.A defensive stand in the closing minutes of the game helped preserve a 34-30 victory for the Rison Wildcats over the Fordyce Redbugs in the season-opening football game here last Friday night.
