Strong Uses Quick Start, Late Surge To Roll Past Bears

WOODLAWN - Going into last Friday’s South Conference match-up with top-ranked Strong, Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer said his Bears had little room for error if they stood any chance against a Bulldog team that he says has the most talent of any team in eight-man football.While Woodlawn managed to close it to a two-score game just before the midway point of the fourth quarter, Strong’s speed and size won out down the stretch as the Bulldogs closed the final period with three late scores for a 52-14 victory over the Bears Friday night at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.“Playing someone like that with the speed they have you don’t have any (room for error),” Meyer said. “You make a mistake, and they turn around and put 6 on the board.”Strong went undefeated last season before having to forfeit all their wins after the Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) ruled the Bulldogs had used an ineligible. That ruling came on the eve of the playoffs and prevented Strong from seeking its second eight-man state championship.Bulldog Coach Jason Porter told Hooten’s Arkansas Football that he felt Strong had the best team last year, and that this season was dedicated to proving that. However, based on Hooten’s preseason coaching poll, the Bulldogs’ biggest challenge during the regular season was going to be Woodlawn, and it was easy to see Friday night that Strong was out to prove a point as the ‘Dogs got off to a fast start.After forcing the Bears to a three-and-out on the game’s opening series, Bulldog quarterback Kaiden McHenry found the edge on Strong’s second snap and raced 68 yards into the end zone to give the ‘Dogs a quick 8-0 lead after Jay Taylor ran in the two-pointer with 9:09 left in the first quarter.Strong added to its lead later in the opening frame when Kaiden McHenry found a wide open receiver for a 65-yard touchdown catch-and-run to make it 16-0 after another successful conversion run....
