10 YEARS AGOJANUARY 28, 2015Local health and school officials are encouraging parents to keep their children at home from school if they begin to show symptoms of having the flu. Both the Cleveland County School District and the Woodlawn School District have been hit hard in recent days by absenteeism of students and staff members due to the flu. At Woodlawn, officials there even took the extra step of sanitizing the elementary and high school buildings over the weekend in an effort to blunt the spread of the disease there.The City of Kingsland may have to look at raising sewer and water rates after the year-end financial numbers showed both city-run departments struggling. Betty Carol Lane, office manager for both the water and sewer departments, informed the council that the sewer department finished 2014 with a $4,200 loss, while the water department finished in the black by only about $700. Lane said this was the first time she could recall either the sewer or water departments finishing the year with a deficit. Also at the meeting, council members approved renaming John Roth as fire chief and Ronnie Smith as town marshal.John Appleget of Rison has been named the new chairman of the Cleveland County Election Commission, succeeding Pete Attwood of Rison, Cleveland County Clerk Jimmy Cummings has announced. Appleget will be joined on the three-person commission by Jerry Spakes of Bowman township, north of Rison, and Gloria Faye Johnston of Rison. Appleget and Spakes are the two Republican representatives, while Johnston is the Democratic representative.
