10 YEARS AGO JUNE 22, 2016 The Rison City Council voted Tuesday night during a special called meeting to offer five acres of the city's 40-acre industrial park on the east side of Hwy. 79 North to Cleveland County as a possible site for a new county jail. Rison Mayor Vernon Dollar called the meeting as Sheriff Jack Rodgers continues his fact-finding mission in preparation for a report he will give to the county Quorum Court about the county's jail situation next month. Earlier this month, Rodgers reported to the Quorum Court that the county's jail is not in compliance with several state standards.
The board of the Cleveland County School District approved a proposed budget of expenditures for the 2017-18 school year, totaling more than $8.9 million. The largest expense for the district is salaries, which is projected to cost more than $4.6 million.
20 YEARS AGO JUNE 28, 2006 Six of the 17 suspects arrested in connection with the June 2 drug raids in the Rison area are asking the court to reduce the amount of their bonds. All six of the suspects remain in the county jail here.
Installation is underway on extension of water and sewer lines to the Rison Industrial Park site along Hwy. 79 north of town at a cost of over $245,000.
After seeing the initial bids for a new physical education building come in well over budget, Woodlawn Supt. Billy Williams told the school board Monday night that he has made some cost-cutting revisions to the plan that may help the district follow through with the project. The lowest bid the district received for the proposed building was $375,000, nearly twice as much as the original estimate.
Michael Boyd of the Randall community, a 1990 graduate of Woodlawn High School, was recognized as the 2006 Young Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association, the state's largest voluntary legal organization.
