Brig. General Roger L. Mc-Clellan, a New Edinburg native and now commander of the Arkansas National Guard, flew into Rison by helicopter Saturday to deliver the keynote address for the formal opening of the new Hall-Morgan Veterans Building across from the court square. The building replaces the old American Legion Hut, which was razed to make way for the new facility.
Mayor Vernon Dollar told the Rison City Council last Thursday that the city has applied for a $200,000 grant to begin making improvements to the Pioneer Village here.
U.S. Senator John Boozman announced that members of his staff will be in Rison next Tuesday to hear from citizens about problems involving the federal government.
The Woodlawn School Board formally accepted the resignation of Superintendent Billy Williams Monday night and will begin developing a strategy to hire a new administrator later this week. Williams will be leaving at the end of June to begin his new superintendent's job at Drew Central School in Monticello.
Kelly Dutton, 44, of Woodlawn, died in a two-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon near Harrell in Calhoun County.
The Rison Wildcats captured the state title in the Class 2A division Saturday at the Arkansas High School Weightlifting Championships in Russellville. The Wildcats had a total lift of 4,790 pounds to edge second place Mineral Springs and third place Hazen. Rison's Devonta Jones won the individual overall state title among all classifications in the 132-pound division.
Payton Palazzi of Rison Middle School was elected president of the Arkansas Junior Beta Club - grades 5-9 - during the convention Saturday at Arkansas Tech University.
