10 YEARS AGOAPRIL 22, 2015The Arkansas Department of Education handed out its "report cards" for local schools for the first time last week, and all of the schools in Cleveland County earned at least a "C" or better to compare favorably with other schools in this region of the state. For the Cleveland County School District, both elementary schools at Kingsland and Rison were given "C" grades, while Rison High School received a "B." For the Woodlawn School District, the elementary school received a "C" while the high school earned a "B." The letter grades are part of Act 696 approved by the state legislature in 2013. It was designed to help parents and the public better understand how well a school is performing, according to the Department of Education.The Kickstart Cleveland County Community Development Initiative will hold its second community meeting Thursday evening at the New Edinburg Community Center. This meeting comes two weeks after Kickstart Cleveland County held its first community meeting at Kingsland, where a group of citizens will be organizing a local community development effort there.In an issue related to the razing of the old elementary building on the Woodlawn School campus, Supt. Dudley Hume presented the school board with a proposal to build a new storage area that would provide space for storing many of the things currently stored in the old elementary classroom structure. No action was taken by the board on Hume's proposal. The original plans were to have the old elementary building taken down during the summer, but the district must first find space for the items stored there as well as a place to put the three classrooms that are currently being utilized in the building.
