10 YEARS AGO JULY 31, 2013 Jim and Shanna Knowles of the Herbine community, along with their son, Chandler, 13, and daughter, Ashtyn, 18, have been selected as the 2013 Cleveland County 'Farm Family of the Year.' The Knowles family operates Blakey Creek Farm, which consists of several broiler houses at Herbine.
After Cleveland County received enough of a 'general rainfall' to lower the fire danger, Judge Gary Spears lifted the county-wide burn ban that had been in place since July 9 due to dry conditions.
Three people from the Fordyce area have been arrested and charged with sexually abusing five children stemming from incidents in Cleveland and Dallas counties. Arrested were Brian Hull, 41, of Fordyce, along with his wife, Angela Hull, and his father, Rick Hull. They were charged with multiple counts of child sexual abuse. The charges include rape, child pornography, incest and computer exploitation of a child in both Dallas and Cleveland counties. Law enforcement officers said all the children involved ranged in age from 2 to 17.
The pieces are starting to come together for rejuvenating the Rison in the Fall Festival to be held at Pioneer Village in October.
20 YEARS AGO AUGUST 6, 2003 The Cleveland County Quorum Court voted Monday to allow Judge Vernon Dollar to negotiate a settlement with Get Rid of It, Inc., concerning more than $11,000 in unexpected fees to dispose of bulk trash containers from the transfer station at Rison. The containers are filled with scrap metal, wood and other bulk items.
Voters in the Woodlawn School District will decide at a special election Tuesday the fate of a proposed 5.5 mill increase that would be used to expand and renovate buildings on campus.
The Quorum Court approved an amendment to an ordinance, clarifying that the county's ambulance service will be a paramedic service offering 'advanced life support.'
