10 YEARS AGO AUGUST 27, 2014 Construction on a new outdoor recreation area at the Cleveland County jail is underway this week, as Sheriff Jack Rodgers begins to make improvements to keep the jail in compliance with state regulations.'Digital learning' classes are now being offered to high school students in Cleveland County and across Arkansas this year, thanks to Act 1280, a law approved by the state legislature and signed by Governor Mike Beebe in 2013. Students access their class online and conduct all classroom assignments over a computer. Students do have an opportunity during a course to have face-to-face interaction with the instructor over a web camera. Angelia Crouse, counselor at Rison High School, said the true intent behind Act 1280 is to start preparing high school students for the ever-expanding digital communication platforms students will face in college as well as in the workforce.Stacy L. Watts, 42, of Rye, died Friday afternoon in a head-on collision near Chidester in Ouachita County.David Stover of Woodlawn, a W.H.S. graduate and former Bear standout, will be among a class of five athletes who will be inducted into the University of Arkansas-Monticello Sports Hall of Fame for 2014. Stover was the best pitcher of his era and one of the best in school history. From 1971-74, he compiled a career earned run average of 2.24, a school record, while recording 285 strikeouts, also a school mark. As a senior in 1974, he earned first team All-AIC and All-NAIA District 17 recognition.20 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 1, 2004 The Cleveland County fair parade will help to officially kick off 'Fair Week' activities beginning at 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon along Main Street in Rison.Both the Rison Wildcats and Woodlawn Bears kick off their 2004 high school football season Friday, with the Wildcats hosting the Fordyce Redbugs and the Bears traveling to Magnet Cove to face the Panthers.
