 10 YEARS AGO AUGUST 6, 2014 Trash bills for all residents of Cleveland County, including those living in Rison, will end when the new 2-cent sales tax goes into effect on October 1. The move comes after the county Quorum Court approved an agreement with the City of Rison to assume the city's solid waste liabilities effective October 1, the same date the new voter-approved sales tax will be implemented county-wide.Voters in Whiteville township in northeastern Cleveland County will decide in November if they want to ban the sale of alcoholic beverages in their township after backers of an effort to make the area 'dry' received enough signatures to put the question on the general election ballot.Matthew Spencer, 33, of Kingsland, died Saturday afternoon in a motorcycle accident in Jefferson County, Ohio.After two delays, demolition of the old Phoenix Hotel building and Ackerman building, along with other adjoining structures on Main Street in Rison, took place as scheduled Monday afternoon. About a dozen or so spectators began gathering around the sidewalks surrounding the demolition site at about 2 o'clock, and within a matter of a few hours, the two buildings and adjoining structures lay in a pile of rubble. Plans call for a new bank building to be constructed at the site.Members of the Quorum Court checked out the new lighting Monday night in the county courtroom. The new lighting was installed throughout the courthouse thanks to a grant awarded through the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.20 YEARS AGO AUGUST 11, 2004 There will be only one contested race for a school board seat in Cleveland County next month, when voters head to the polls for the annual school elections September 21.
