10 YEARS AGO JANUARY 9, 2013 Thanks to a little budget shuffling and some last minute fiscal house cleaning, Cleveland County will officially finish 2012 with a budget surplus of just over $18,000 in county general. County judge Gary Spears revealed the news during the Quorum Court's meeting Monday night. And that was some welcome news to a Quorum Court that had been grappling with budget deficits for most of the year. State health officials are currently receiving large numbers of reports of flu infections and hospitalizations from all regions of the state and are aware of seven deaths from the flu. Miss Arkansas, Sloane Roberts of Rison, has been busy over the past several days as she competes for the title of Miss America this Saturday night. Fordyce attorney Tom Wynne was officially introduced to both the Cleveland County Quorum Court and Rison City Council Monday night, as he is now serving in official capacities for both government entities beginning this year. Wynne succeeds Atty. Alan Humphries of Rison for both entities, and he will also be the county's deputy prosecutor. Wynne is currently serving as the city attorney for both Fordyce and Kingsland. 20 YEARS AGO JANUARY 15, 2003 Two Fordyce men were arrested in connection with shooting out streetlights in Kingsland on two separate occasions. The suspects are two of four individuals being investigated in connection with the vandalism. Between the two incidents, the shooters took out around 58 streetlights. Damaged lights were barely repaired from the first shooting when the second incident occurred. The Rison City Council is delaying its decision on whether or not to pursue some changes in the town's current sidewalk improvement project.
