10 YEARS AGO JANUARY 3, 2013 As Circuit Judge Larry Chandler wrapped up his swearing in ceremony for new Sheriff Jack Rodgers Tuesday morning, those witnessing the event inside the courtroom here broke out in a loud applause. Rodgers is the first newly-elected sheriff for Cleveland County in 38 years. His mentor, Joe Paul King, was first elected in 1974 and remained in office until he died in March, 2011, within three months after starting his 18th consecutive term. His wife, Judy King, was appointed to finish out his term. Rodgers became a fulltime employee of the sheriff's office in 1977, and in 1981 was elevated to chief deputy. Rodgers said he plans to keep tabs on drug problems.
The American Poultry Historical Society will award the poultry industry's highest honor to Jack England, a Rison native, who has devoted nearly 60 years to developing a critical service to the poultry industry. England will be inducted into the American Poultry Hall of Fame at the 2013 International Poultry Expo to be held later this month in Atlanta, Georgia. Founder of England Farms, Inc., at Rison, England pioneered the brokerage hatching egg business in America. England entered the poultry industry in 1955 with four chicken houses and a large flock of turkeys.
Sloane Roberts, Rison native and Miss Arkansas, left today for Las Vegas, Nevada, to prepare for her week of competition, leading up to the Miss America pageant on January 12.
20 YEARS AGO JANUARY 8, 2003 The Cleveland County Quorum Court unanimously approved an ordinance Monday to 'loan' the new Solid Waste fund $5,000 to cover start-up costs. Currently, the county's new Solid Waste fund has no money because the county has yet to begin collecting fees. The county is now collecting trash fees since the Cleveland County Solid Waste Authority was abolished December 31 due to ongoing financial problems.
