 10 YEARS AGO JULY 9, 2014 At Monday night's meeting of the Cleveland County Quorum Court, treasurer Jack Hopson told justices of the peace that county general will likely finish 2014 with a negative balance, partly due to the sales tax, as a whole, being down in the county for most of the year. Also at Monday night's meeting, sheriff Jack Rodgers told the court members that he will try to find the money within his budget to build an enclosed outside 'recreational area' to put the county jail in compliance with state regulations.Aron Wayne Durham, 20, of Woodlawn, was one of two people killed in a head-on collision Saturday night along Hwy. 63 near Pine Bluff.The recent auction of tax delinquent properties in Cleveland County collected over $38,000 for county and state governments.Reports indicate that Arkansas is seeing more reports of animals with rabies.A refurbished M3 37mm antitank gun was put in place on the grounds of Veterans Park in Rison Tuesday morning, the latest addition to the park that has been dedicated to honoring local veterans. Donations are still being accepted to place the names of local veterans on plaques that are being mounted around the park.20 YEARS AGO JULY 14, 2004 Death claimed Raymond 'Jack' Sipes, 81, who was serving in his 14th consecutive year as mayor of Rison. Sipes also served as Cleveland County Judge from 1971 to 1980.The Rison City Council, by a vote of 6-0, appointed Delmar Fultz to fill the unexpired term of the late Rison Mayor Jack Sipes, who died July 9. State law provides that the recorder/treasurer is promoted to the mayor's office should it become vacant, but Geraldine McKinney, recorder/treasurer for Rison, said she did not want the job and resigned during a meeting of the council.
