10 YEARS AGO JULY 22, 2015The Kingsland City Council decided in a special called meeting last Thursday night that it will eliminate its city marshal's position effective November 1, and that the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department will be responding to calls in the town after that date. Mayor Charles Crain described the move to eliminate the parttime marshal's position as a financial decision. Marshal Ronnie Smith has a monthly salary of $633.00.The Cleveland County School Board had an impromptu discussion about how the district's teacher salaries stack up against other districts at its regular monthly meeting Monday night. While the salaries were discussed, there was no formal action taken at the meeting, with the topic to be considered in coming meetings of the board.Groups from Rison, New Edinburg and Woodlawn began formulating community development objectives they would like to achieve within the next 30 days during the Kickstart Cleveland County Community Development Initiative meeting here last Thursday night.20 YEARS AGO JULY 20, 2005In an ongoing effort to address complaints of discolored water, the Cleveland County Rural Water Users Association board voted to buy three new pieces of equipment they hope will help lessen the problem.The Rison City Council voted unanimously for paying $86 per month for a portable toilet to be placed at an area in the Lanwood community in the north part of town that is often used for recreation and social gatherings, but is not officially a designated park.The Woodlawn School Board approved raising breakfast prices at the school by 10 cents for both high school and elementary, while lunch prices will be increased by 25 cents for high school and adult meals. Under the new prices, high school students will be paying $1.50 for lunch this school year. Elementary lunch prices will remain the same.Construction on a new two-tier press box at...
