10 YEARS AGOJULY 23, 2014County Judge Gary Spears says that new regulations to protect the rabbitsfoot mussel that lives in the Saline River are coming to Cleveland County, but the scope of those regulations and how they will impact the way landowners can use their property is still to be determined. Last year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service placed the Neosho mucket and the rabbitsfoot mussel on the endangered and threatened species list.The Arkansas State Police will soon be patrolling the streets of Kingsland to begin cracking down on motorists who fail to observe stop signs in the town.The Cleveland County Sheriff's Department has received two complaints from county residents about telephone scams involving the Internal Revenue Service and Publishers Clearing House. In one scam, the victim received a call from an individual posing as an IRS agent and threatened to seize the victim's bank accounts. The telephone number the caller used was actually from Pakistan.20 YEARS AGOJULY 28, 2004Weekend thunderstorms dumped nearly five inches of rain in Cleveland County. More than 43 inches of rain has fallen in the county so far this year, which is about seven inches ahead of the total for the same time last year.Laurie Vienneau, 81, of the "Y" community, died Monday afternoon in a two-car collision at the Hwy. 79-35 intersection in Rison. Four other persons were injured in the crash and were transported to the hospital.Attempts continue to be made to organize a fire department for an unprotected area in northern Cleveland County around the Kedron community. When the Kedron area fire department, stationed at the intersection of Hwy. 133 and Rodgers Road, disbanded in the early 1990s, the area within about a two-to-three-mile radius of the intersection was left with no fire protection.The T...
