10 YEARS AGOAUGUST 5, 2015Sewer extensions and improvements totaling over $355,000 are being made at three separate sites in the City of Rison. The improvements are being made with a $175,000 loan and grant money from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.Discussions are underway that could possibly lead to the City of Kingsland acquiring the old post office building in town to be used for a local museum, promoting native son Johnny Cash and others.The Rison City Council heard a request from members of the Kickstart Cleveland County Community Development Initiative Tuesday night, asking the city to help in local development efforts in the town and encourage the council to help enforce building codes in the downtown area once improvements are made.Construction on a new Head Start facility at Woodlawn may finally be able to get underway after the Cleveland County Quorum Court gave Judge Gary Spears permission to sign off on a three-way contract that will allow the project to move forward.Meanwhile, the court also learned that the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture's Cooperative Extension Service will be needing more money over the next two years to assure that the county's local office at Rison will remain staffed as it is now.For the seventh consecutive month, the balance in Cleveland County's county general fund has shown improvement over the same month last year, Treasurer Jack Hopson reported.
