10 YEARS AGO JUNE 11, 2014 With local schools now dismissed for the summer break, several programs are gearing up around Cleveland County to make sure those students who rely on free and reduced lunches are not going hungry while they are out of school. So far, there are three daily feeding programs now in operation inside the county - two at Rison and another at Kingsland.Officials with the natural gas provider for the Kingsland area has estimated it will cost between $45,000 to $65,000 to extend natural gas service along Bear State Street at the northeast edge of town if all the residents and the single church there agree to connect to the system.The first mounted plaques listing the names of veterans with ties to Cleveland County have gone up at Veterans Park in Rison, with even more to be put up shortly. So far, John Blanchard of Rison reported that nearly $6,000 in donations has been invested in honoring local veterans through displays at the park as well as group portraits of local veterans. Those portraits are being permanently displayed inside the county courthouse here.The Ray Bryant family donated .41 acres of land on Mt. Lebanon Road that the New Edinburg Fire Department will use to build a new sub-station there that will provide better fire protection for those living in the Mt. Lebanon and Smith Chapel communities.The Kingsland City Council approved a recommendation by water office manager Betty Carol Lane to write off $4,323.51 in delinquent water bills. Lane said that figure reflects two to three years worth of unpaid bills.20 YEARS AGO JUNE 23, 2004 Per capita, there are more men diagnosed with prostate cancer in Cleveland County than any other county in Arkansas.
