95 YEARS AGO MARCH 15, 1928
One of the largest illicit liquor manufacturing outfits ever seen in Cleveland County was captured in a raid Tuesday afternoon by sheriff Jno. E. Smith, deputy sheriff S.H. Burford and marshal Rufus Smith of Kingsland. The raid was made about four miles from Saline River in northwest Cleveland County. The outfit was in full operation at the time of the raid, with three men in charge. The operators fled and avoided capture at the approach of officers.
George L. Rector, local Chevrolet dealer, says that all automobiles are not bought on credit. Saturday he delivered a used car to a negro in this territory, receiving $200 in silver as payment for the car. The money, consisting of 79 silver dollars, 234 half-dollars and 16 quarters, was put in two sacks which Mr. Rector carried to the bank across his shoulder.
Chancellor H.R. Lucas held one of the busiest sessions of Chancery Court here Monday that he has presided over since his term as chancellor began three years ago. Among action taken was the granting of six divorces.
A victory and two defeats gave the Kingsland Greyhounds 13th place at the state senior basketball tournament in Batesville Friday and Saturday. There were 21 entries.
