10 YEARS AGO MARCH 25, 2015 Data from survey information will be important in recruiting businesses and adding tax revenue for Cleveland County. According to the total amount of local sales tax revenue distributed to each county in Arkansas in 2014, Cleveland County ranked among the lowest. In some cases, even counties with less population than Cleveland County had significantly more sales tax revenue. County Treasurer Jack Hopson said that about 90 percent of the sales tax money that comes into the county is from retail sales.The Arkansas State Highway Department has announced that it has withdrawn 56 construction projects scheduled for consideration in its April, 2015, bid opening due to continuing uncertainty of federal aid reimbursement available from the Federal Highway Trust Fund; however, the list of withdrawn projects did not include any for Cleveland County. The estimated value of projects withdrawn from the April bid opening is more than $112 million, including $50 million for the highway overlay program. Figures indicate the 2014 sales tax revenue for Cleveland County totaled $736,305.A meeting is scheduled April 9 at Kingsland to gauge what interest there may be in starting a community development initiative for the Kingsland area as part of the Kickstart Cleveland County organization, a new county-wide community development program.20 YEARS AGO MARCH 23, 2005 Firefighters from the Rison and 'Y' volunteer fire departments were able to gain control of a wildfire late Friday afternoon south of the Cleveland-Jefferson County line and kept damage minimal to a pine plantation.Despite having the money to do it, Supt. Billy Williams told the Woodlawn School Board that there simply isn't any room to place a Compressed Interactive Video (CIV) lab on the Woodlawn campus.
