10 YEARS AGO MAY 14, 2014 The fate of Cleveland County's proposed 2 percent sales tax, as well as one position on the Quorum Court, will be decided next Tuesday in the preferential primary and special election. The tax proposal, if approved by voters, will fund the county's solid waste program and eliminate the quarterly trash bills that residents are currently paying. Also, the election will determine the winner in the District 9 Justice of the Peace race between incumbent Charles Rodgers, Jr., and former sheriff Judy King. Rodgers and King are running on the Democratic ticket.While the legal battle over the state's new voter identification law is ongoing, Cleveland County Clerk Sharon Gray is reminding voters that a stay has been granted in the case and voters will still be required to present some form of photo I.D. when they vote next Tuesday. The law was approved by the state legislature last year and is being implemented statewide for the first time during the May 20 primary election.Cleveland County Clerk Sharon Gray said Monday that her office is not among those issuing marriage licenses for same-sex couples after a ruling by Pulaski County Circuit Court Judge Chris Piazza last Friday overturned the state's constitutional ban on homosexual marriages. Gray said she will continue to follow state law and the state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage until a superior court rules otherwise.The Woodlawn Bears baseball team and the Lady Bears softball team have earned bids to their respective state tournaments this week. The Lady Bears will play in the state tourney at Marked Tree and will open play against Marmaduke Thursday afternoon. The Bears are hosting the 2A state baseball tourney for the first time, with game sites at Woodlawn and at Taylor Field in Pine Bluff.
