10 YEARS AGO MAY 29, 2013 New Woodlawn School Superintendent Dudley Hume and family visited with staff members and others during a 'meet-and-greet' session at the school last Thursday. Hume, currently superintendent of the Webbers Falls (Okla.) School District, will take over July 1 at Woodlawn to succeed Supt. Billy Williams, who is taking the head job at Drew Central School in Monticello.
With the new downtown 'pocket park' about to become a reality, the Rison Shine Downtown Development group is turning its attention to a 'Paint the Town' event this summer, as well as possibly developing an art display in the new 'pocket park' on Main Street.
Six residents of Cleveland County have filed to run for the District 3, Position 1 seat on the C&L Electric Cooperative Board of Directors. The seat was previously held by the late Joe Ralph Thompson of the Pansy community. Those who filed for the position include John Ed Ashcraft and Ray Gavin, both of Pansy, David Stover of Woodlawn, Wendol Swinney of Rye, Terry Thompson of Herbine and Bob Young of Rye.
Geneva Prather is valedictorian and Julie Hollis and Julia Martin are co-salutatorians of the Rison High School graduating class.
The U.S. Postal Service has announced that it will be releasing a pictorial cancellation stamp commemorating Kingsland as the birthplace of country music legend Johnny Cash beginning next Wednesday. Cash was born February 26, 1932, at Kingsland. He and his family moved to Dyess, Ark., when he was age 3.
20 YEARS AGO JUNE 4, 2003 Investigators suspect old wiring to be the cause of the May 25 fire that destroyed Kingsland High School, and they found no evidence of foul play. Although the state legislature's pending decision on school consolidation makes the fate of the district uncertain, Superintendent Sammy Hartwick plans to rebuild and has met with architects for preliminary estimates and plans to 'jump start' a project.
