10 YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 28, 2012 A Cleveland County grievance committee decided last Tuesday to reinstate Gary Young to the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department after hearing testimony for about three hours on his dismissal from the department by Sheriff Judy King. Members of the Quorum Court served as the grievance committee, with the court's attorney, Alan Humphries, serving as the moderator. Young, a long-time employee with the sheriff's department, was fired from his job as captain of the department on October 23. Shortly thereafter, Young filed a request with County Judge Gary Spears to hold a grievance hearing over his dismissal. Darren Snow, 23, of the Pleasant Ridge community in northeast Cleveland County, was fatally injured late last Wednesday night when he attempted to make a Uturn in his Toyota pickup and pulled into the path of a southbound tractor trailer driven by Larry Williams, 43, of White Hall on Highway 63 near the Country Store. Williams was not injured. Two Red Cross volunteers from Cleveland County recalled some of the scenes they encountered after taking part in relief efforts outside New York city in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy earlier this month. Linda Linneman and Hardy Herrington, both of Rison, provided hot meals to victims. 20 YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 26, 2002 Facing a budget shortfall, the Cleveland County Quorum Court's budget committee decided to eliminate two part-time positions and hold off on any new raises for county employees in its final 2003 budget proposal approved Monday. Under a new contract for garbage pickup, Rison residents will see their monthly trash fees reduced to $10 per month. Rison residents are currently being charged $14.50 per month for trash pickup.
