Meyer Pleased With Both Sides of Ball in First Camp

WOODLAWN - Coach Zach Meyer said he saw some positives both offensively and defensively Tuesday from the Woodlawn Bears' first camp of the summer. Woodlawn hosted Rose Bud and Parkers Chapel Tuesday for a 5-on-5 camp at the Carl Jones Sports Complex Tuesday morning. The first half of the camp featured 10-play series while the second half consisted of what were essentially 5-on-5 scrimmages. "I thought Aden (Moore) looked solid at quarterback," Meyer said. "He made some really good throws downfield." Moore and Garrett Weatherford, both juniors, took snaps at quarterback during the camp. Moore took the the first 10-play series while Weatherford took the second. Moore was quarterback for both the scrimmages that followed. Meyer said a third quarterback, senior Brayden Jones, was at a baseball camp and was unable to attend Tuesday's camp. He said Jones, who was a starting quarterback in junior high, is also getting looks at quarterback after missing the past two seasons. Weatherford, a three-sport athlete, is returning to the football program after taking last year off. Meyer said Weatherford is "still getting up to speed" at the position and needs to get more snaps and practice under his belt before they can really see where he is at. Moore played well in both of the 10-play series. He missed just two passes in the first series as he guided the Bears downfield for a touchdown. He was also on target for most of his throws in the second series. He did struggle a bit in the first scrimmage against Rose Bud before bouncing back with a strong finale against Parkers Chapel. "He kind of got down on himself after that first one (against Rose Bud), but he finished really strong in the second," Meyer said. Meyer said the Bears will continue to have a run-oriented offense that sprinkles in the passing the game off play action.
